Finding out is free, confidential, and commits you to nothing.

Here is exactly what the first step is, what happens after it, and the two ways to take it.

What the first step actually is

It is a form you fill in, in private. Your name is not given to the person you might donate to, or to your employer. The person who reads your answers — at My Kidney Story, or at the transplant center — gets in touch with you directly. From there, everything medical is handled by a transplant center, where clinicians whose job is your welfare — not the recipient's — decide together with you whether donation makes sense.

  • The person you might donate toNot given your name
What you send goes to the people who help with the next step: a person at My Kidney Story who helps you reach a transplant center, or the center's living donation coordinator directly. Your name is not given to the person you might donate to, or to your employer, unless you choose to tell them. If you started from their page, they can see how many people have gone on to the questionnaire, never who.

Two ways to take the step

If a particular person's story brought you here, start from their page — that way your screening is connected to them from the beginning. If you got here on your own, you can ask someone to call you instead.

Donate to someone specific

If a particular story brought you here, open their page and use the button on it — that way your screening is linked to them from the start.

Not sure yet? Talk to someone first

Leave your details and a person at My Kidney Story gets in touch — to answer what you are wondering and, whenever you want, to help you reach a transplant center. No commitment, no obligation, and your name is not given to the person you might donate to, or to your employer.

Have someone call me

A person at My Kidney Story reads what you send and gets in touch to answer your questions. When you want to take the next step, they help you reach a transplant center's living-donor team.

We never ask for medical information here, and we do not share your details with anyone other than the person who calls you back.

Still wondering about something?

Ask in your own words. The assistant only draws on the sourced material this guide is built from — and for lived experience, the mentors are real people.

Ask the guide anything

This assistant shares general information about living donation — it is not medical advice, it cannot tell you whether you could donate (only a transplant team can), and this conversation is not saved.

My Kidney Story does not collect, store, or evaluate medical information, and nothing on this page is medical advice. Donor eligibility is determined solely by a transplant center after its own independent evaluation.
