Terms of service

The rules for using My Kidney Story, in the same plain language as everything else on the site.

What My Kidney Story is, and what it is not

My Kidney Story is a storytelling and sharing tool for people who need a living kidney donor, and for the people who help them ask.

My Kidney Story is not a medical service. Nothing on this site is medical advice, My Kidney Story does not screen or match donors to recipients, and My Kidney Story never makes a clinical judgement about who can donate. Only a transplant team can decide that, after its own independent evaluation.

Eligibility

You must be 18 or older to create an account.

One campaign per account — that is enforced by the system, not just this policy.

You may run a page on someone else’s behalf only with their permission. Publishing someone’s name, story, and photographs without their consent is not something My Kidney Story’s terms allow, whatever your intentions.

A page run for someone else is not published on your word alone. We email the person it is about, they confirm it themselves before it can go live, and they keep their own link to take it down at any time without going through you.

Your content

You own what you publish on My Kidney Story. By publishing it, you give My Kidney Story a licence to display it and to share it the way the product does — on your page, in flyers, in a share-card image, and to people who follow your updates. That licence exists only so the product can work; it is not a transfer of ownership.

You are responsible for the truth of what you publish. We may remove content that is fraudulent, that solicits or offers payment of any kind, or that endangers someone — and we act on reports the same day.

The no-payment rule

Organ donation is a voluntary gift and can never be bought or sold. Under the U.S. National Organ Transplant Act, it is a federal crime to acquire, receive, or transfer a human organ for valuable consideration. My Kidney Story does not accept, process, or facilitate payments of any kind between donors and recipients, and no donor is ever compensated for donating. Certain donation-related costs, such as travel and lost wages, may be lawfully reimbursed through established assistance programs — that process is handled by the transplant center, entirely outside of My Kidney Story.

Acceptable use

No harassment, of anyone, for any reason.

No impersonating another person, a hospital, or My Kidney Story itself.

No scraping the site or its data — the directory and campaign pages are for people, not automated collection.

No attempting to identify a prospective donor who has filed an enquiry. Enquiries reach a person at My Kidney Story and never the patient, and that boundary is not yours to work around.

The AI features

The story-writing assistant and the donor guide chat produce suggestions, not final copy. You are responsible for what you actually publish, whether or not the assistant helped write it.

Enquiries

Filing an enquiry to say you would like to find out more commits you to nothing. My Kidney Story passes your details to a person who connects you with the campaign’s transplant centre — My Kidney Story makes no medical judgement about you at any point in that process.

Availability

My Kidney Story is in beta. We make no promise about uptime, and we can pause or end the service. If we do, we will try to give notice and a way to take your content with you.

Disclaimers and limitation of liability

My Kidney Story is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that using My Kidney Story will result in finding a donor, and nothing on the site should be read as implying it will.

To the fullest extent the law allows, My Kidney Story is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of [State], United States.

Changes, and how to reach us

If these terms change in a way that matters, we will say so on this page. Questions go to /help, which reaches a real person.
